(KSL News) -- Utah has a new state school superintendent. The Board named Patti Harrington to the post this afternoon.

The former Superintendent, Steve Laing, resigned at the end of March for personal reasons.

Harrington is 51-years old and the first woman to hold the position in more than 100 years. She says there are many ideas for education in Utah right now, including "No Child Left Behind" and "Performance Plus." Her goal is to combine them into one plan.

Patti Harrington, State Superintendent: "For the sake of our schools and our children and their parents, we need to align those plans so that it's one conservative action moving towards student achievement."

Harrington began working in Utah education 26 years ago as a field trip bus driver. Most recently, she was the Associate Superintendent over the Student Achievement and School Success Division.
