WEST VALLEY CITY -- A fender-bender turned violent overnight when one man ran the other over as he was standing in the street.

It all started at a red light at 4700 South and Bangerter Highway around 10:30 Friday night. Police said Ron Torres ran into the back of another man's stopped car.

Lt. Bill Merritt with the West Valley City Police Department said, "The victim got out of his car to look to see what the damage was, and was unfortunately run over by the suspect, who was fleeing the scene."

A county deputy saw the accident and tried to follow Torres, but eventually lost him.

Police said Torres later called his car in as stolen, but officers found it in the parking lot of his apartment complex.

They said at first Torres denied being involved.

"We leaned on him just a little bit. He did confess to what happened -- stated that he was scared, had a denied license, didn't want to be in trouble -- so he ran."

Police arrested Torres on several misdemeanor charges.

The driver who was hit seemed OK at the scene, but went to the hospital later in the day. He was rushed into surgery, and as of Saturday evening was in critical condition.

Police said they weren't sure if he was going to survive.
