Sandra Yi ReportingBe prepared for a major road closure this weekend. A big chunk of southbound I-15 will be closed all weekend long. If you plan on heading south tonight or this weekend, you'll want to plan ahead.
Starting at 8:00 tonight, southbound 1-15 will be closed from the 2100 south I-80 interchange all the way to 7200 South, as crews will be repairing all the bridge joints along that stretch of highway.
The Utah Department of Transportation says there are two reasons it completely decided to shut down the freeway. UDOT says feedback showed more people preferred short, intensive closures to smaller closures throughout the year.
This weekend's closure will shave six weeks off the project. It also makes construction safer. Last year, there were more than 20 accidents in one weekend alone when crews kept at least one lane open.
So again, starting tonight, I-15 from the spaghetti bowl to 7200 South will be closed until Monday morning at 6 a.m. You'll want to make plans for alternate routes.
You can also call 5-1-1 to check on the closure as crews may finish earlier and reopen 1-15 Sunday night.
