LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- An 82,000-item genealogical library collection city officials said has been appraised at $1.7 million has donated to the Logan Library.
City and business leaders hope it will generate a tourism boost.
The gift will "put Logan city on the map as a major location for genealogical research in America," Mayor Doug Thompson told a news conference Wednesday.
The collection of books, family newsletters, journals, maps and other materials was accumulated by Everton Publishers, a Nibley-based business that closed in June after publishing genealogical magazines and books since 1947.
The collection was donated to the library by William Schjelderup of Salt Lake City, an investor in Everton Publishers who acquired the genealogy library in January.
Bobby Coray, president and CEO of the Cache Chamber of Commerce, said the donation will generate year-round tourism from some of the thousands of people who visit Salt Lake City genealogy collections,
"This is a vital addition to our economic well-being in Cache Valley," said Coray.
Ron Jenkins, librarian at the Logan Library, said, "This gift would be coveted by any major library in this world. We're so pleased it's being kept in Cache Valley."
