Amanda Butterfield reportingFor the next three years, the Utah Department of Transportation will be studying a widely used stretch of road to figure out how to make it less congested, and they want your input.
The road being evaluated: The I-15 corridor from Salt Lake City all the way down south to Santiquin. UDOT's studies show population along this stretch of freeway is expected to experience major growth, and become even more crowded.
That's why they're taking a long-term approach to resolve traffic issues.
The Environmental Impact Statement is a 30-year projection to relieve traffic here. It will take into consideration residential growth, motorists' needs, and the environment.
But before any improvements are made, they want the public's help in exploring all options.
Brent Wilhite, UDOT: “A lot of people just think the simple answer is to expand the freeway and add more lanes; we're trying to educate the public on different modes of transit. "
And that includes commuter rail, light rail, bus rapid transit, and adding more carpool lanes.
To get the public involved, UDOT will be holding several open houses on the project, and also has an email address and snail mail address you can send your suggestions too.
