(KSL News) -- A Marine with family ties to Utah is back in the news as the military repopens the case into his disappearance.

It's still not clear exactly what happened to Corporal Wassef Hassoun when he disappeared from his base near Fallujah in June.

But US troops say Hassoun's personal effects were found last week in a box on the third floor of a three-story commercial building in Fallujah. The property included an identification card, a uniform and a book.

After he disappeared, Arab television showed a videotape of him blindfolded with a sword hanging over his head. At one point a group claimed he had been beheaded.

In July Hassoun returned to the Marine base at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He has since returned to duty.
