OREM -- A standoff snarled traffic Tuesday evening in Orem. It happened just west of the 800 North exit.

An officer noticed a blue van parked just off the road and decided to run the license plates. He found that they were expired and approached the driver.

The man identified himself as Jeffrey Pingle of Arvada, Colo. Then he rolled up the window, held an object up to his chest and threatened to kill himself.

"[He] wouldn't say what it was, just that it was something that could hurt himself, that he wanted to die, that he wanted the police to kill him," said Utah County sheriff's Lt. Eva Rice.

After a short standoff, officers arrested the man without incident. A bomb squad went through his vehicle but didn't find any explosives.
