WEST JORDAN -- Residents in West Jordan woke Monday to find their property damaged by vandals. Police have arrested five people in connection with the crimes.
Police say the five suspects, one of whom is a juvenile, pretty much just walked down the street picking out targets - a mailbox here, a vehicle there. Luckily someone spotted them and called police.
Chris Gehring's truck was vandalized. He said, "It's frustrating to come out and find out that your vehicle has been broken into."
Gehring is just one of the several people living on Kentucky Drive in West Jordan who now has the hassle of cleaning up, filing a report and replacing damaged property.
"They need to be taught that it's not right, that it does cause a lot of havoc, a lot of work and frustration," he said.
West Jordan police say the five people are responsible breaking into at least two cars and smashing a mailbox. Someone spotted the group as they were breaking into Chris Gehring's truck and called police.
West Jordan police officer Dan Roberts said, "At about 6 a.m. one of the residents in the neighborhood saw two people throwing rocks and making entry into one of the vehicles."
Roberts says as officers arrived on scene, they found stolen items scattered up and down the street in nearly every direction. They also found their suspects walking nearby.
"We've made some arrests, and now we're trying to find evidence that will link them up to this criminal mischief and maybe a couple of others," Roberts said.
West Jordan police also had two other vehicle break-ins nearby but say it's unclear if the cases are connected.
Gehring says he's just happy at least someone was busted for causing the damage on his street.
"It may not seem like they did a whole lot to them, but it causes a lot of other people down the line a lot of frustration," he said.
West Jordan police say they know of at least three vandalism cases along Kentucky Drive. But they say as they get further into their investigation, there may be several more.
