SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A polygamy advocacy group is sponsoring its first-ever conference for attorneys on the legal issues associated with lifestyle.
Principle Voices Director Mary Batchelor says the Friday conference is designed to provide a snapshot into the family, criminal law and constitutional issues that often confront plural families.
Experts will provide a review of past cases, including a massive 2008 raid on the Texas ranch owned by Utah's Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints that put more than 430 in temporary protective custody. Batchelor says two attorneys from the Texas Rio Grande Legal Aide will discuss how they successfully argued to have the children returned to their parents.
A woman raised in polygamy will also give attendees a primer on understanding the polygamous culture.
