SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Chemical weapons may be shipped to Utah. The Defense Department is now studying a proposal that could mean shipments of chemical weapons to the Army's incinerator in Tooele for disposal.
Documents show President Bush is planning to cut spending for the chemical weapons disposal program.
As a result, the Defense Department is searching for ways to minimize risk and still destroy the chemical agents by the 2012 deadline imposed by an international treaty.
However, opponents say the risk for an accident or terrorist attack during the shipments make it an unacceptable proposal.
A spokesman for the Healthy Environment Alliance of Utah says they will fight to keep the weapons out of Utah.
