SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The head of Utah's Republican Party says he strongly opposes two citizen initiatives on redistricting and ethics reform.
Chairman Dave Hansen told the party's 180-member State Central Committee on Saturday that while the party won't take an official position until November, he guesses it will oppose the measures.
The redistricting initiative would create an 11-member commission to redraw the state's legislative districts. That job is currently the sole responsibility of the Republican-controlled Legislature. Under the initiative lawmakers would still get the final say.
A second measure calls for the establishment of an independent ethics commission that would set standards and enforcement policies for Utah lawmakers. Hansen says he believes it goes too far.
