(KSL News) -- Payson police are investigating a fatal accident this evening. They say it started in Payson when police tried to pull over a 2000 Honda Civic driven by 23-year old Brandon Erdmann of Payson for a traffic violation. Erdmann took off.

Police say he headed onto the southbound freeway with police right behind him. UHP joined the chase and threw spikes onto the freeway but Erdmann maintained control.

Before it was over the Honda collided head-on with a Freightliner semi truck. Police say the driver of the semi tried to avoid the collision, but they say it looked like Erdmann tried to hit the truck on purpose.

Erdmann died in the collision. The semi-truck driver and his passenger were fine.
