(KSL News) -- A Salt Lake medical center reached a national milestone today. Ninety-five percent of the families who came to the University of Utah Hospital last year consented to donate the organs of their loved ones to those in need.
That exceeds the national average for hospitals, which stands at 50 percent.
Many were on hand to pay special recognition to the hospital staff, including a tearful 9-year old Kalee Glennon who received a kidney transplant.
The mother of Kassandra Nelson was also there. The Nelson's made the difficult choice to donate their daughter's organs when she died.
Debbie Nelson, Daughter Donated Organs: "I think the doctors and nurses deserve such a great, great reward. The empathy that they showed to our family and the service and compassion that they shared."
A new name is added to the US transplant waiting list every 13 minutes.
