SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah Supreme Court Justice Michael J. Wilkins says he'll step down after a decade on the high court.

Wilkins sent a letter last week to Gov. Gary Herbert announcing he'll retire May 15.

He tells the Salt Lake Tribune he's interested in doing mediation work.

Wilkins says he plans to keep hearing cases through November and complete work on those matters by the time he leaves the bench.

Wilkins calls himself a judicial conservative. He was appointed to the five-member high court in January 2000, after six years on the Utah Court of Appeals.

In his letter to the governor, he quotes a friend who says it's better to leave too early than too late.
