SALT LAKE COUNTY -- Work is set to begin next spring on the much anticipated Mountain View Corridor. The Utah Department of Transportation on Thursday named the contractor for the project and expects to begin the earthwork within months.
The Copper Hills Constructors Team, made up of Granite, Kiewit and W.W. Clyde construction companies, will help UDOT finish design and estimating work, and complete construction of a 10-mile stretch of the four-lane highway.
The first phase will connect with Redwood Road near Camp Williams on the south and 9000 South near 5500 West on the North. But the hope is to go beyond that.
"We think with the way prices are right now it's likely we can go north of 90th South," said Project Director Teri Newell.
Newell says contractor bids continue to come in low, so they hope to stretch money for the project as far as possible.
Construction on the first phase will begin in late spring or early summer of 2010 and is expected to last about four years.
Initial construction will build two lanes in each direction with signalized intersections for future interchanges. The additional lanes will be added at a later date.
The full build-out includes a freeway that connects with Interstate 80 at 5800 West in Salt Lake City in the north and Interstate 15 at 2100 North in Lehi in the south.
