SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A beloved Hogle Zoo hippo will soon have a new home -- but he doesn't know it yet.
This spring, Moe the Hippo will travel in a crate from Salt Lake City's Hogle Zoo to his new home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The 31-year-old male hippo will settle into retirement with a three-year-old female hippo named Karen.
However, moving to a new place can be a hard change in a hippo's life.
Since October, Hogle Zoo staffers have been helping Moe prepare for his upcoming move by putting a four-foot-wide crate in his house. They hope he'll get use to the crate before he travels in to New Mexico.
Although Moe is a popular fixture, hippos don't fit into Hogle Zoo's long-term plans. Zoo officials say other projects, like a new elephant area, are taking up resources.
