SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah is again negotiating with Nevada over water that straddles the two states.
The executive director of the Utah Department of Natural Resources says he's optimistic the states will come to an agreement.
Mike Styler told a meeting of the Utah chapter of the American Water Resources Association today that Utah will protect its water rights.
Styler acknowledged water levels on the Utah side would be affected. He says studies need to be done and will play a role in negotiations.
The Southern Nevada Water Authority's project would pipe water from wells to booming Las Vegas. Some of the wells are near the Utah state line.
Water rights holders on the Utah side are worried water piped from the Nevada side would draw down wells in Utah.
