SALT LAKE CITY -- Animal rights groups are increasing calls to do away with the way in which some animals are euthanized in Utah.
In small towns like Hinckley in central Utah and Monticello in the south, stray animals that are not adopted are shot. That's legal in Utah as long as it's done humanely, but some claim that isn't always the case.
Gene Baierschmidt, director of the Humane Society of Utah, says it would be nice to see some statewide standards.
"I realize it's a difficult situation for all these small towns to then have the large budgets to train people, but the preferred method is by lethal injection," he said.
Baierschmidt says animals that are euthanized deserve a humane death.
In Hinckley, one resident claims injured animals have strayed away after being shot and onto her property. The mayor says that is not true.
