(KSL News) -- Lock your doors! That's a message for college students from Provo Police following a rash of burglaries.
More than 100 burglaries since the first of the year and police say the most popular stolen item is a computer laptop. Police say the cases are all very similar-- someone walks in through an unlocked door and walks out with valuables.
Police started getting reports of the burglaries at the first of the year and the calls keep coming in. There were six burglaries at off campus student apartment complexes just this weekend. Besides laptops, other items being stolen are backpacks, DVD players, digital cameras and other expensive items.
Investigators say they have increased patrols between 1:00 and 5:00 in the morning, when a majority of the thefts seem to have occurred, but they need students to protect themselves as well.
Capt. Rick Healey, Provo Police: "We really believe whoever it is, they are just walking around checking doors, finding open doors while people are asleep and walking in while they are sleeping."
Police say they have little to go on as far as suspects and are asking for help. Particularly they say if someone is seen an apartment and makes up and excuse like, "Oh I am looking for so and so," or apologizes for walking into the wrong apartment, to call police.
Overall police say students have been victimized of thousands and thousands of dollars in stolen goods.
