SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Police say the investigation into the severe beatings of two 15-year-old boys earlier this month has reached a dead end.

South Salt Lake police Captain Tracy Tingey says one of the boys is conscious and has been interviewed several times. However, the boy doesn't remember anything about the incident.

Tingey says the other boy is in a "vegetative state." It's unclear whether the condition is permanent.

Captain Tingey says it appears the beatings were personal and someone was out to kill them. He said at least one of the victims was seen at school the day before the boys were found beaten in South Salt Lake.

Officers say they have been unable to find anyone who was with the boys before the assault.
