SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon has chosen a familiar name in public health to lead one of the state's largest local health departments.

Yesterday, Corroon announced Gary Edwards will take the helm of the Salt Lake Valley Health Department. He will replace Patti Pavey, who left the position in December.

Edwards will leave his current position as director of the Southwest Utah Public Health Department.

Edwards said his priority for his new post will be to educate and improve the health of Salt Lake County residents. He also plans to focus on the county's large youth population.
