WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) -- The ten-year-old granddaughter of a couple who died in an apparent murder-suicide this week has been taken into state custody.

The girl had been in the custody of Laurel Quibell, who was shot to death in her home on Tuesday.

Police said Quibell was apparently shot by her ex-husband Lyle Kilpatrick, who then shot himself outside a K-O-A campground. Kilpatrick has been living at the campground since the couple's divorce in May of 2004.

The couple had taken custody their granddaughter from their eldest daughter about five years ago.

D-C-F-S spokeswoman Carol Sisco said the girl is safe and getting counseling.

A hearing is scheduled today to determine where the girl will be placed.

Meanwhile, funeral services for Quibell will be held on Saturday at the Valley View Memorial Park at two p-m. Lyle Kilpatrick's funeral services will be held on Monday at Evans and Early Mortuary at two p-m.
