SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Green groups gathered with politicians yesterday to commemorate the permanent protection of 14 acres at the mouth of Parleys Canyon.
Parleys Canyon is a popular public access point to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and Grandeur Peak.
Saving the open space has been a priority for conservationists who since 2001 have teamed with Salt Lake County leaders to secure the land.
The Trust for Public Land borrowed 500-thousand dollars to purchase the parcel nearly four years ago. Since then, Salt Lake County, Salt Lake City, Utah Open Lands, Save Our Canyons and the outdoor retailer R-E-I joined community groups and other nonprofits to repay the loan.
The trailhead is located near the intersection of Intestates 80 and 215 on the Salt Lake Valley's east bench.
