SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah's public colleges and universities are hoping to reach a compromise with lawmakers that would allow for a partial ban on concealed weapons.
University of Utah's president and the Senate's president have formed a group to consider crafting a bill that may prohibit guns from residence halls, sporting events and other common areas.
Back in September, the Utah Supreme Court struck down a ban on guns at the school. The justices declared campuses may not adopt a policy that conflicts with state law. Utah law allows someone with a permit to carry a firearm.
While the University of Utah wants to ban guns, some lawmakers aren't sure such a ban would ensure a safe environment.
