PILAR, N.M. (AP) -- A Utah woman who couldn't swim has been killed in a rafting accident on the Rio Grande in northern New Mexico.

Police said 61-year-old Carol Whalen of Heber City drowned on Sunday after her raft flipped on a section of the river between Pilar and Embudo.

All seven passengers were thrown from the raft, including Whalen's sister, Joyce Kraut. Officers said Kraut was taken to a local hospital where she was in good condition on Sunday.

Police said the other five rafters were uninjured.

Authorities said nearby rafters were able to pull the victims from the river, but weren't able to resuscitate Whalen.
