Utes, Cougars ranked in AP preseason poll

SALT LAKE CITY -- The University of Utah and the BYU Cougars are both ranked in the AP preseason Top 25 poll. The Utes are ranked 19, the Cougars No. 20.

TCU is ranked 17, making it three teams from the Mountain West Conference in the top 25. That is as many as the Big Ten and Pac-10.

Florida is No. 1 followed by Texas, Oklahoma, Southern California and Alabama.

BYU opens up against Oklahoma at the new Cowboys Stadium on September 5.

The rest of the top 10 includes two teams from the Big Ten (No. 6 Ohio State and No. 9 Penn State) and the defending ACC champion (No. 7 Virginia Tech).

No. 8 Mississippi is in the preseason top 10 for the first time since 1970, when the Rebels were ranked fifth.

Oklahoma State is tied with Penn State for No. 9.

No. 14 Boise State is the highest ranked team from a non-BCS conference. The Broncos, last season's WAC champions, open up the season against No. 16 Oregon on Sept. 3.

The Big East has no teams in the top 25.
