But employees at a downtown office building would rather be doing other things.

Medi Gelinas was playing solitaire on her lunch hour, but couldn't keep her eyes off the clock.

Medi Gelinas: "It was 10:30 and I said ‘that's all it is?'"

Sheldon Lamont does technical support for stock market software.

Sheldon Lamont: "I'd rather be home with my family than worrying about people's money on the markets."

Monica Whalen with the Employers' Council says it's a tough job keeping workers motivated this time of year, costing companies money.

Business owners say clients don't want excuses. Studies show productivity starts plummeting two weeks before Christmas and doesn't recover until mid-January.
