Alex Cabrero Reporting Crews are still cleaning up the mess a tanker left behind on I-15. The pup trailer on a big rig came loose, rolled, and spilled chemicals off the side of the highway just north of Brigham City.

Exactly what caused the accident is still not known, but I-15 northbound near Brigham City was shut down for nearly three hours because of it.

From the air, you can see how fortunate it is this crash didn't do any more damage. From the ground, it looks pretty much the same: a small tanker pup on its side, some of its wheels ending up on the other side of a fence.

Investigators say the driver still doesn't know how it happened.

Lt. Lee Perry, Utah Highway Patrol: "He wasn't certain. He just said he came into the curve here, and he felt the vehicle... The rear end of the pup trailer started to lose control and traction."

And when it did, it came off the rest of the truck, rolling over onto the right side of the interstate just north of Brigham City.

Lt. Perry: "He tried to maintain control of it. He said it whipped back and forth, and the next thing he knew, it was coming off the back end."

That's a problem in itself, but the bigger concern was what was inside that pup: sodium hydroxide, a chemical that started leaking out of the pup, forcing crews to close down traffic and detour it off I-15 northbound.

The driver of the truck was not hurt, but he was ticketed for improper lane travel.

Brenntag Pacific told us on the phone that the chemical is used for water neutralization, and was on its way to Idaho.

Crews are still cleaning up what was spilled in Box Elder County.
