WEST VALLEY CITY (AP) -- A California family was forced to spend Christmas in a Utah hospital after their car plunged into an icy creek.
The accident happened yesterday in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Police say the family of five from Riverside, California was driving down the canyon when they hit black ice and fell off a 40-foot embankment --- landing in icy waters.
Officers say a 46-year-old man, the driver, and a 5-year-old girl were able to escape from the car and climb up the embankment for help. A 43-year-old woman, 29-year-old man and 24-year-old woman were later taken to the hospital.
Police say the driver was going too fast for the conditions. The accident remains under investigation.
