SALT LAKE CITY -- College-level calculus may be a breeze for some people, but for others, it's a downright scary proposition. This week, the University of Utah hopes a calculus boot camp will help.

When you think of boot camp you might think of whistles and shouting. But instructors of the U's calculus boot camp say they will be nice.

"Math is fun," says Marilyn Keir, an instructor in the U's Department of Mathematics.

She says many fields of study require calculus--like math, physics, biology, geology or chemistry. Computer science, architecture, geology, engineering, and pre-med majors require calculus, but Keir says it scares some students away.

"A lot of people think of it as the gatekeeper that really doesn't let people through. But they can, if they come and work all of these programs and sink into it, they can do it," Keir said.

Janet Goff with academic programs and continuing education says this week-long boot camp is a noncredit course for anyone going to any college.

"So if you're going to Weber State or even off to California, you are welcome to sign up and be ready when you go off to college," she said.

Keir says it's a review of college algebra and trigonometry. Students will take an Accuplacer test at the beginning and end of the week to see if they are ready to tackle a college calculus course.

The classes run August 17-21, all day with a lunch break. It costs $165 for all materials and testing and takes place at the LeRoy Cowles Building on the U of U campus. Those wanting more information can call 801-581-7155 or call the Department of Mathematics at 801-581-6837.
