Read KSL's Take here SALT LAKE CITY -- Kyle Whittingham put his Utes through their first scrimmage of the season Thursday. Whittingham said he saw "great effort, guys flying around and nobody holding back." The coach added he was "pleased for the most part but we still have a long way to go." Of course, the big story coming in this morning was the quarterback situation. Since the start of fall camp it's been a three-man race between Corbin Louks, Terrance Cain and Jordan Wynn. And after it was over, there was no announcement. Whittingham said they'll go over the film and have a depth chart out tomorrow.
There were no official stats kept, though each quarterback played with the number one offense and went against a modified number one defense as well. During the two-hour, 100 play scrimmage, true freshman Jordan Wynn threw a 35 yard touchdown pass to Jereme Brooks, while Terrance Cain launched a 60 yard TD strike to Eddie Wide.
Wynn's longest throw went to John Peal, a 48-yarder, but he also threw an interception during his final possession of the day. After the throw, Wynn left the field with his head down, knowing ball control is one of Whittingham's biggest issues. Still, Wynn's arm was impressive. In a post- scrimmage interview, Louks said he still feels he's the number one guy.
Offensive Coordinator Dave Schramm knows after tomorrow's announcement someone's heart will be broken but admits it's not set in stone. The list could change by the team's next scrimmage, which is Tuesday.
Several key players didn't see action today, including all three starting linebackers--Stevenson Sylvester, Mike Wright and Kepa Gaison. Both starting safeties--Robert Johnson and Joe Dale--also sat out, as did Koa Misi, Zane Beadles, Matt Asiata and David Reed. With Asiata on the sidelines, Eddie Wide and Sausan Shakerin handled most of the carries today.
One of Whittingham's primary goals today, aside from the quarterback race, was seeing how the young players would do in a scrimmage situation. He said, "It was a good opportunity to see what they have with decisions on the travel squad and redshirt possibilities approaching."
The Utes get back to two-a-days Friday.
