BRIGHAM CITY, Utah (AP) -- Students at Discovery Elementary School know the true meaning of Christmas.

Over the past month they've raised more than eleven thousand dollars to pay medical costs for a 3rd-grade classmate suffering from leukemia.

Nine-year-old Austin Jones was diagnosed with the disease in June.

At a school assembly yesterday his family was presented with a check.

Austin's mom, Staci Jones says she's overwhelmed by the generosity.

Discovery students pick a holiday charity each year.

Students sold Christmas light, rubber bracelets and other items to raise the money. They also designated days of the week for collecting specific coins. More than $1,000 was raised just in pennies and nickels.
