(KSL News) -- Some young men out for an afternoon in the snow ended up getting stuck in it and unable to get down.
The three teenagers were snowshoeing and skiing up Big Cottonwood Canyon near the Days Fork trail when one of them broke his leg.
They tried to craft a splint out of a shovel, but were unable to move the injured man. Search and rescue crews were called in, as well as a helicopter.
It took four hours to get the men off the mountain. Authorities say the rescue went well because the men were prepared with warm clothes and avalanche recovery equipment.
Lt. Jon Fassett, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office: "These guys came very prepared to be in the backcountry. It's unfortunate that somebody got hurt, but they were prepared to deal with an emergency."
The injured man was taken by air to a hospital. The other two men are being treated for dehydration.
