SALT LAKE CITY -- A scare for passengers aboard an inbound Delta flight to Salt Lake City.
Delta Flight 1118 was heading from Oakland, Calif., to Chicago with a layover in Salt Lake City when it experienced some strong turbulence. Anthony Black, spokesman for Delta Airlines, said all 146 passengers were seated and were not hurt. He said three flight attendants, who were not seated, suffered minor injuries.
The plane landed at the Salt Lake International Airport a little after 4 p.m.
Black said, "At some point on approach, the aircraft encountered some turbulence, very briefly and no passengers were injured, but there were some flight attendants who were working at the time, who are being looked at currently by paramedics. We'll see what becomes of [those injuries]. The flight will continue as schedule."
One passenger said the pilot came on the overhead speaker and said smoke was rising from Stansbury Island creating a heat pocket, which lifted the plane. The plane's autopilot took over and dropped the plane in altitude to fight the lift.
The passenger described it as a "great big woomph." He said people screamed and drinks went up to the ceiling.
Once it was over he said passengers were cheering and clapping.
Mechanics looked over the plane and cleared it to continue on to Chicago.
