SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A former West Valley police officer who was indicted on one count of importing anabolic steroids is expected to learn his fate today.

Twenty-seven-year-old Steven C. Ward is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court this afternoon. Ward resigned from the police force earlier this year for an undisclosed reason.

Prior to resigning, Ward was cleared of any wrongdoing in an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead.

Authorities say Ward was conducting surveillance on a nearby house last July, when Bounmy Ousa approached his car. Ward and his partner told the man to go away. But when the man reached behind his back, appearing to grab something, Ward shot the man. It turned out Ousa was grabbing for a flashlight --- NOT a weapon.

Today's sentencing is set to begin at 3 p.m at the Moss Federal Courthouse before Judge J. Thomas Greene.
