SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Dec 19, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The controversial owner of a California newspaper alleges she was defamed by the author of a magazine article critical of the paper's management.
The suit named Susan Paterno, a Chapman University journalism professor, who wrote an article for American Journalism Review. Legal documents allege the story was "nothing but a biased, false and misleading diatribe" against the Santa Barbara News-Press, The Los Angeles Times reported.
The suit was filed on behalf of Wendy McCaw, the billionaire owner and co-publisher of the News-Press. McCaw has been embroiled in a number of disputes recently, some of them with staff members who accuse her of interfering with the news operation and some seeking to unionize.
Howard King, Paterno's attorney, called the suit an attempt at intimidation, the Times said.
