DISH Network to pay nearly $6 million for alleged unfair sales practices

SALT LAKE CITY -- DISH Network customers in Utah and 45 other states could be entitled to restitution as part of a $5,991,000 settlement.

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff and the Utah Division of Consumer Protection were part of a multi-state group that claimed the satellite TV provider practiced deceiving and unfair sales techniques.

By signing the agreement DISH Network is denying any wrong doing, but will pay restitution to customers.

"This settlement agreement is good news for Utah consumers who have been on the receiving end of DISH Networks' poor customer practices," said Kevin Olsen, director of the Utah Division of Consumer Protection. "The message would be to avoid deceptive practices because, not only does that create a problem with their customers in the long term, but it creates a problem with the state."

"DISH has put an end to its dubious practices," says Shurtleff. "This settlement should send a clear signal that companies must treat their customers fairly."

No word yet on how much of the settlement money will be coming to Utah.

Allegations against DISH Network include: refusing to accept responsibility for misconduct by third-party retailers and installers, making telemarketing calls in violation of do-not-call rules and failing to disclose all terms and conditions of customer agreements.

The Utah Division of Consumer Protection has looked into at least 80 complaints against DISH Network since 1997.

Unresolved complaints can be sent to DISH Network, Utah Division of Consumer Protection or Utah Attorney General's Office by Dec. 14, 2009.
