SALT LAKE CITY -- You may not like paying state taxes, but you have to do it anyway. A Cedar Hills man is learning this the hard way.
Officials from the Utah State Tax Commission says Gilbert McIff falsified his W2s, saying he didn't make any money. Commission Spokesman Charlie Roberts says McIff's employer told them McIff actually had a steady job. "Between 2002 and 2007, he refused to pay any state income taxes," Roberts said.
Over that period, McIff's debt started to really pile up.
"He owes the state over $56,000 in back taxes and criminal penalties and interest," Roberts said.
McIff is charged with failing to file a proper tax return, as well as communication fraud and tax evasion, which could lead to between one to 15 years in prison.
