SALT LAKE CITY -- A former Murray police detective will spend two years behind bars for sexually abusing a teenage girl.

In April, Michael Spilman, 35, pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a teenage girl over the course of five years.

He admitted to two counts of forcible sex abuse for fondling the girl. As part of a plea deal, a third charge of misdemeanor sexual battery was dismissed.

He faced up to 30 years in prison, but on Monday the judge suspended his prison time and instead gave him two years in jail and 36 months of probation. He also has to complete a sex-offender treatment and register as a sex offender.

Spilman had been a Murray police officer for almost 10 years. He resigned on Jan. 12, a day before formal charges were filed against him.
