SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Department of Corrections spokeswoman Angie Welling has been named Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert's communications director.

As communications director, Welling will serve as Herbert's chief spokesperson and will help shape his image in the state as he takes over gubernatorial duties from Gov. Jon Huntsman.

Huntsman is expected to resign from office later this summer once confirmed by the U.S. Senate as ambassador to China.

Welling, 31, has served as the public information officer for the Utah Department of Corrections since 2007. Before that, she worked for nearly eight years as a reporter at the Deseret News in Salt Lake City.

Welling holds a journalism degree from Weber State University and a master of public administration from the University of Utah.
