SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City sees some big opportunity in a convention for convention planners that is underway at the Salt Palace right now.

The gathering of Meeting Planners International is made up of only about 3,000 people, but Shawn Stinson of the Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau says they represent potentially billions of dollars in new business.

That's the reason why the city has pulled out all the stops for this one, and Stinson says the timing is pretty good.

"Salt Lake's in an ideal situation right now. We're not really known as a destination, as junkets go and so forth. So, we are really playing to strengths right now," Stinson said.

At the same time, it's one of the first big conventions since changes in Utah's private club laws. Stinson says, at the very least, that helps with perception.
