PROVO -- More Utah County children are turning to free lunch this summer.

The state's child nutrition program helps kids with free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. It runs year round.

According to the Daily Herald, a state nutrition official says Utah doesn't have a high rate of poverty but there is a high rate of food insecurity.

The paper says the Provo School District saw a 27 percent increase in the number of kids showing up for free lunch in June while the Alpine School District saw a 31 percent increase from a year ago.

The program is funded by federal money.
