SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Senate committee has allocated $211 million to replace the federal courthouse in Salt Lake City.

Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, says construction of a new courthouse has been needed for 17 years.

Bennett added the item to a budget bill approved Thursday by the Senate Appropriations Committee.

At first, administrators sought funds to build an annex at the Frank E. Moss Courthouse.

But the U.S. District Court's docket grew so large in the 1990s that officials decided a new courthouse was the better option.
