Ashley Hayes Reporting A woman desperate to find her husband called police last night because she was worried he was going to kill himself.
An officer came across the man by chance for speeding. Even with the woman's warning, they were unable to stop him from committing suicide.
This started last night when the man's wife called police, saying she could not find her husband. She was upset and believed he was suicidal.
Not long after the call, a Syracuse police officer was preparing to stop the man for speeding, but the man would not pull over.
The officer didn't know about the man's described condition until he called in the license plate. The police station advised the officer the driver may have a problem.
Police say the man was driving recklessly and at one point almost hit someone else. The police officer followed the man. The chase never went above 45 miles an hour.
The driver then hit another police car. When he got out of the car, officers approached him and tried to talk to him. That's when they say he pulled out a stolen gun and shot himself.
No officers were hurt.
Bill Chilson, Clinton City Police Chief: "He was very high risk as far as that goes. Any time you get a suicidal individual, you don't know what they're going to do, especially when you confront them, because you know the ones I've seen in the past 20 years in these types of situations, don't care about anything."
This is the second case where a driver has shot himself on Utah roads over the last month.
Police say this man had been drinking. Officers found a note in the front seat, but hadn't read it.
