SALT LAKE CITY -- The number of Utahns filing new claims for unemployment benefits has nearly quadrupled since 2007.

Back then, the Department of Workforce Services was getting about 980 new claims a week. That number jumped to nearly 3,800 a week by May of this year.

That has the department issuing weekly checks amounting to more than $14 million.

Utah's unemployment rate of 5.2 percent is still well below the national average. That number currently sits at 9.5 percent.
