(KSL News) The U.S. Supreme Court will not hear an appeal in a Utah case that sent a first-time drug offender to prison for 55 years.

Weldon Angelos was convicted of 16 counts of federal firearms violations, drug and money laundering in 2003. He was sentenced to a mandatory prison sentence, a ruling the judge called "unjust, cruel and irrational."

Prosecutors say Angelos was carrying a pistol while selling about 300 dollars worth of pot to undercover agents. He never brandished or used the weapon.

Angelos' only other option is to seek clemency through a presidential pardon.
