OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- A Utah grocery chain says about 50 pounds of meat that was part of a recall because of possible E. coli contamination was distributed to 48 stores in the state.

Smith's Food & Drug Stores says the Utah total was just a fraction of the 41,000 pounds recalled this week by JBS Swift Beef Co.

Smith's spokeswoman Marsha Gilford says the grocery chain is asking customers to check their freezers for beef that was subject to the recall. She says the sell-by dates would range from May 5 to May 24, 2009.

A Swift spokesman says the recall, issued in 13 states, is voluntary and no illnesses have been reported.
