Samantha Hayes Reporting The latest incident happened last night near the Road Home shelter.
The victim in this case told police David Garnett stole his money by pretending to be a federal drug enforcement officer.
The circumstances around this are certainly a bit shady. The man who was robbed admitted to police he was in this area of downtown to buy drugs
Joe Cyr, Sallt Lake City Police Department: "The victim in this most recent case came to us and said ‘I was down at the shelter. This is what I was doing,' and he described an illegal activity."
Police say he was going to buy drugs when Garnett, posing as a DEA officer convinced him to hand over his money or be arrested.
Investigators are sure it was Garnett because he wrote the man a receipt for his drug money, the same kind of receipt he's been using in other crimes where he has been claiming to raise money on behalf of law enforcement programs like "Shop with a Cop" and DARE.
In October, Garnett was arrested for rape.
Police say he pretended to be a bail bondsman and promised to help his victim's friend get out of jail. He bailed out of jail, and police don't want him to get away again.
Joe Cyr: "Garnett's MO appears to be always representing himself as some sort of law enforcement officer, bail bondsman, or fundraiser or a law enforcement agency."
Apparently he learned a few of these impersonation tricks by working briefly for the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Association.
