Locals Drafted in 2009 MLB Draft

Several BYU Cougars were drafted in the just completed 2009 major league draft. Including a couple of locals. Junior Steve Parker was the highest drafted of all the BYU baseball players. The third baseman from American Fork was taken in the 5th round (153rd pick) by the Oakland A's.

November signee Tyler Curtis from West Jordan, starred at Taylorsville High, most recently played at the College of Southern Idaho was taken in the 13th round by the Florida Marlins.

Other BYU players drafted, righthander Jeremy Toole taken in the 10th round by the San Francisco Giants. Sophomore outfielder Stetson Banks taken in the 22nd round by the L.A. Dodgers and senior DH Kent Walton goes to Oakland A's, in the 23rd round, same team that drafted him in the 42nd round last year.

Just one Utah player drafted, righty pitcher Brian Budrow a second team All-MWC selection. "I am happy for Brian," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "It's a great honor for him to have the chance to continue playing. It's well deserved."

Other local players, 7th round is where Pleasant Grove's Egan Smith went, 220th overall pick to the Toronto Blue Jays, he's playing baseball at the College of Southern Nevada. Keenyn Walker, from Judge Memorial High School, the last native Utahn's drafted, 16th round 500th pick by the Cubs.
