SALT LAKE CITY -- In six month's time, gasoline prices have soared about 72 percent in Utah. That's the biggest jump in at least nine years.

Nationally, the increase was 62 percent.

Experts at AAA, who track these statistics, say this actually may be a sign the economy is improving. But that's little consolation for the consumer, who is paying on average $1.06 per gallon more than they were six months ago.

Major changes have taken place in a month's time. The price of gasoline has gone up roughly 35 cents from Ogden to Provo.

AAA's average price for gas in Utah Wednesday morning is $2.52. Utah has the 15th lowest gas prices in the U.S. right now, which is unusual in the summer months.

Experts say the rising price of crude oil is behind much of the jump in gas prices. Some analysts say the demand for oil remains weak.
